The boys really shined this Fall as they learned about how to throw and pitch through use of efficient movement patterns. They also got a great introduction to strength and mobility work.
The integration of efficiency of movement and high-level strength work is the essence of DSP baseball training. It is unfortunately all too uncommon in the present baseball world.
It is great to see that every one in the Fall program has registered for both the throwing program and the strength program in the Winter.
They will be prepared to play this Spring!
The bonus session on Tuesday this week was a chance to see tangible progress.
Several of the boys set personal records for velocity. Most importantly, all of them showed a diligence to work their plans on their own. I love it.
One 13 year old topped 70 mph for the first time. Congratulations to him for his efforts in the studio that brought him to that point. With his work ethic, there is no doubt more growth will be coming his way.
While I am not a proponent of velocity being the only the marker of progress, especially for young throwers, the kids do love seeing results! Who can blame them.
At DSP, we are proponents of sticking with a validated process that gives clients the greatest chance to see the results they want.
A reminder of he DSP process:
1. Assess – The Functional Movement Screen and Video Assessment of Movement Patterns tell us about each client’s individual strengths and constraints.
2. Customize a Plan – The data from the assessment allows us to give each client a plan that is tailored to their needs of the moment. Our clients don’t have time for a one-size-fits-all approach.
3. Work the Plan – Great plans become valuable only when clients have a fanatical desire to grow. We help them by working to get a growth-mind-set through videos, talks, a high-vibe atmosphere, and more.
4. Re-Assess – Even the best laid plan needs amending as clients’ needs change.
Take a look at one of our new 11 year old clients and see how he grew over the course of the eight week program
Before
Our 11 year old client may have been effective on the mound throwing with this pattern before training at DSP. However, effectiveness without efficiency leads to injuries and loss of performance over time. We want effectiveness AND efficiency for all clients.
Results from the Functional Movement Screen and Video Movement Pattern Assessment indicated multiple inefficiencies and constraints that required attention.
Our young client was eager and got to work on the custom plan created for him!
After
Client added 4 MPH of actual velocity and another 3 – 4 MPH of perceived velocity
Release point is significantly out in front of the lead foot! See the yellow line. This is advantageous for creating perceived-velocity from the batter’s perspective. Note: There was no overt coaching on release point. It changed once the client addressed the inefficient movements that lead up to release.
- Rear foot in plantar-flexed position on the floor at ball-release. This is another marker of a more desirable and efficient means of generating and delivering force. Note: there was no overt coaching of this posture. The client simply arrived at this after being given goals and opportunity to learn through trial and error.
For those interested, make sure to contact Coach Fox or myself to reserve a spot right away. 75% of our Winter spots are already reserved. The word is getting out that DSP’s Advanced Pitching Program is TOP DOG! Don’t miss out!
